Your Guide to Using Mineral Sunscreen
As the weather gets warmer, most of us become more careful about using sunscreen regularly. In fact, research and clinical studies consistently show the importance of wearing sun protection all year long. However, considering everyone’s different lifestyles and priorities, this is not always easy to maintain consistently.
Still, once the sun starts becoming stronger and more noticeable, staying consistent with your sunscreen routine becomes especially important — not only for maintaining healthy skin and slowing down visible signs of aging, but also for helping prevent concerns like acne marks and hyperpigmentation from worsening.
At this point, we all face the same big question:
Which type of sunscreen should we choose?
Mineral sunscreen uses mineral UV filters such as zinc oxide to provide broad-spectrum sun protection and is often preferred for sensitive skin due to its strong safety profile.
There are generally two answers to this question: mineral or chemical sunscreens.
Nowadays, hybrid sunscreens — products that combine both mineral and chemical filters — are also becoming increasingly popular. However, because these formulations still contain chemical filters, we personally consider them within the chemical sunscreen category.
As we always say, our choice is mineral filters.
Because when it comes to health, mineral filters remain the option with the strongest safety profile and the fewest question marks surrounding them.
That said, using mineral sunscreen can sometimes feel a little more challenging or less practical for some people. So today, we wanted to make the process easier by answering the questions we receive most frequently about mineral sunscreens and how to use them properly.
1. Who Are Mineral Sunscreens Suitable For?
Mineral sunscreens are suitable for all age groups starting from 6 months old. Before this age, if newborns or infants are expected to be exposed to direct sunlight, parents should consult a healthcare professional first.
Mineral sunscreens are also commonly recommended by experts for sensitive skin conditions such as dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, and rosacea.
2. How Should Mineral Sunscreens Be Applied?
Mineral sunscreens can be applied immediately before sun exposure.
Unlike chemical sunscreens, they do not require a waiting period of around 15 minutes to become effective. This is one of the reasons many people consider them a safer and more practical option.
They can also be reapplied frequently throughout the day and while under the sun.
Like all sunscreens, mineral sunscreens should always be applied to dry skin.
One common mistake is applying sunscreen while the skin is still damp after swimming, showering, or washing the face. This may cause uneven application and potentially contribute to patchiness or uneven pigmentation over time.
3. Can We Apply Moisturizer Before Mineral Sunscreen?
Absolutely.
Before applying sunscreen, it is important to complete your skincare routine according to your skin type — including moisturizer if needed.
Even though sunscreens may come in creamy or moisturizing textures, whether mineral or chemical, they should not replace a proper moisturizer.
4. How Should Mineral Sunscreens Be Cleansed Off?
If mineral sunscreens are not properly removed at the end of the day, they may contribute to clogged pores over time.
That’s why using a cleanser suitable for your skin type every evening is essential.
However, using a mineral sunscreen does not automatically mean you must double cleanse every single time.
Our recommendation? Calma Cleansing Water.
5. Can Makeup Be Applied Over Mineral Sunscreen?
Yes — makeup can absolutely be applied over mineral sunscreen without affecting its SPF protection.
Some mineral sunscreens may leave a white cast on the skin. One of the best ways to minimize this effect is exactly what we mentioned earlier: applying a moisturizer suitable for your skin type beforehand.
This helps the sunscreen spread more evenly and absorb more comfortably into the skin.
